Crape Myrtle
With all the crape myrtles in bloom I've been dying to get one.
I did all the research about what size I wanted (not to big), what color (white),
the shape (of a small tree)
and decided on one that should be fairly easy to get in the fall when
I would plant it.
Acoma it was.
Now I would just wait.
My father has some in his yard.
They have been there for quite some time
and they are still pretty small.
They are a pretty puple and babies seem to be
springing up all over the yard.
So I asked him for one.
I figured it would be easy just to plant
one next to the mail box
since the front of the yard gets some of the most sun.
He comes over with this.
From Walmart.
I don't know what it is.
How big it gets.
It IS very pretty though.
All my planning for nothing.
Ah well, this seems to be the anti-plan garden anyways.
Isn't that life?

We have one established Crepe Myrtle, which is bright pink. You see a lot of the hot pink ones in Austin. I guess they were really trendy at one point, because they're all about the same size, which leads me to believe they were planted around the same time. We purchased another one last fall... I think it's called Dynomite, and it's a smaller variety. It was supposed to be red, but once we planted it, the flowers turned pink. Somebody in my neighborhood has a walkway lined with the dwarf purple variety- it's a really nice effect (but my husband doesn't like purple.)
Hello Amy,
We have two Acoma Crepe Myrtles and I bought them because I wanted white, and they're supposed to be semi-dwarf. We'll see if the variety lives up to its press! My blog is only a few weeks old - I'll try to get a photo of my Acomas on there soon.
I sympathize with you - Myrtles have so much variation in height. That WalMart baby could have a 3 foot personality or a 30 foot one!
Yeah pink seems to be the dominate color in Mobile right now. Alot of the white ones started blooming first though. There are these odd maroon colored ones in front of Dreamland on Old Shell. They started blooming with the whites and they are still going strong. They also have a really small leaf. I haven't seen them anywhere online so I don't know what they are.
There really are a million different kinds it seems...
I can't wait to see a picture of the Acoma's Annie. I probably do have the 30 foot tree that gets every disease in the book....and it will probably turn pink! :)
